Beagles are a terrific breed of dog, and owning one of these adorable animals can bring you many years of enjoyment. Beagles are susceptible to certain diseases, however, and all owners need to be aware of specific conditions that tend to affect the breed. Epilepsy

Epilepsy is frequently seen in beagles, as it is with a few other breeds. The disease causes a loss of motor control in dogs, which manifests itself as twitching and spasms. Beagles with epilepsy are also likely to have intermittent seizures in which the animal will convulse and collapse on the floor. After a seizure, the dog may be lethargic and confused. It might take a few hours or even a whole day for the dog to recover from this type of seizure completely.

Fortunately, in many cases, epilepsy in beagles can be brought under control with drugs.

Eye Problems

Beagles are susceptible to eye problems, one of which is known as cherry eye. This is an inherited condition that occurs when some eye tissue gets out of its proper position and protrudes from the dog's eye socket. In some instances, if the condition is caught early enough, it might be possible for an owner to massage the exposed tissue back into place within the eye. Typically, however, you will need to take your beagle to the veterinarian for treatment if this condition occurs.

Another eye condition that is common in beagles, glaucoma, happens when a buildup of pressure behind the eye eventually causes damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma is a serious condition which can sometimes lead to blindness. Symptoms include cloudiness in the eye, dilated pupils, and one eye appearing to be bigger than the other. Hypothyroidism

This disease is caused by thyroid hormone insufficiency. Beagles with hypothyroidism will tend to suffer from skin conditions and be prone to bacterial infection. The condition is not curable, unfortunately, and your pet will need lifelong treatment if they are diagnosed with the disease. In many cases, however, the disease can be controlled by taking synthetic thyroid hormone orally.
